5 Tips for Success in STAR Events

By Andrew Rasmussen, VP of Programs

Participating in STAR Events is a great way to get involved in FCCLA while growing personal skills such as public speaking, time management, critical thinking communication, and so much more! When you compete in these events, you embark on a great opportunity to plan and carryout projects that you are passionate about. If you are already preparing to compete in STAR Events or are interested in competing next year, I have compiled a few tips to help you become a star!

  1. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare.

It seems like an obvious tip, but don’t forget about the importance of preparation and practice. The more practice your event presentation, the comfortable you will be. Practice with a variety of audiences such as: advisers, teachers, parents, friends, and anyone else that will listen. They all will have a different perspective and different suggestions for improvement.

2. Read the rules.

Again, a rather straightforward tip, but the key to scoring well is laid out in the event guidelines and rubrics. Follow the event guidelines thoroughly to make sure you don’t miss anything. Pay close attention to the wording and order of the rubric and use that as an outline for your presentation. Remember that the judges are looking at that same sheet as you present.

  1. Sweat the details.

Showing up on time (aka early), having your folder correct, wearing appropriate dress, and staying in your presentation time limit will help you avoid missing out on “small points”. These points can add up quick when it comes to scoring. Be sure to plan ahead on presentation day to ensure an early arrival and pack what you need ahead of time, so you will have everything you need to shine!

  1. Confidence is key.

Months of preparation have lead you to this day… it’s time to present. Take a breath and remember that you are the expert on your project. Showcase your hard work with confidence and explain your materials in a way that you feel comfortable. The judges want to see you succeed, so go in there and rock it! Practice makes perfect and you will do great.

Good luck to everyone competing in STAR Events at NLC! We are so proud of you and cannot wait to watch you succeed.
