INSIDE: Celebrating the Holidays with the NEC!

Celebrating the Holidays with the NEC!

This is a wonderful time of year! However you celebrate it, there’s many magical things to do. All of the NEC members have different family traditions. Take a look!

“My family tradition is making hot chocolate for everyone and then playing Monopoly! It gets super competitive, but it’s one of our favorite ways to spend time together.”

– Rohit Iyer, National Vice-President of Finance

“On New Year’s Eve, my whole extended family meets at this delicious pizza restaurant and shares a meal together. After we finish dinner, we stop by the bakery and get various Italian pastries and hang out in the living room as a family. We eat the pastries while watching TV, waiting for the ball to drop in NYC.”

– Gabriella Cutruzzula, National Vice-President of Community Service

“We spend the holidays shopping and drive by houses decorated in lights. Then we celebrate our year by eating at a fancy Italian restaurant. Since my brothers have grown up and moved away, it’s the only opportunity we have to really spend time together. We have a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy dinner as a family.”

– Garrett Christiaens, National Vice-President of Programs

“I usually go iceskating with friends or watch a movie with my parents while sipping hot chocolate, but this year my family and I plan to spend a day in New York City! We are going to see the gorgeous window displays at Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdales, visit the Rockefeller tree, and get dinner together as a family. The holiday season is one of the few times in the year that we can all be together because of our busy schedules, so we’re really excited to spend this time together!”

– Stephanie Zhang, National Vice-President of Competitive Events

“Every time our family gets together, my cousins and I have a friendly competition to see who can make the best dish. We all know that grandma is going to cook the best dish, so she serves as our judge. After having a bite of each uniquely delicious creation, grandma gives a gift card to the winner!”

– Raniel Mendoza, National Vice-President of Parliamentary Law

“Every year around the holiday season, my family focuses on giving back to others. Instead of exchanging gifts with each other, everyone finds a card on the angel tree and buys a gift for someone else is need. Then we all get together and share a huge meal prepared by my grandma, mom, sister, and me. While we’re all gathered around the table, we share what gift we gave to our angel tree recipient. We end the night with my mom’s famous apple cider and a slice of homemade pie in front of the fire. It’s a great time for all and a wonderful way to give back to those in need.”

– Allyson Monson, National First Vice-President

“I really like looking at the lights around town and, of course, playing in the snow. After all, I am from Utah, and we do have the greatest snow on earth! The communities go all out around here. All of downtown is covered in lights. It’s a blast to just walk around downtown and look at the thousands of lights and grab some hot chocolate. Some people put lights on their houses and sync them to different popular songs on the radio. We’ll pull up, tune our radio to their station, and enjoy the show. This year is also the first year I’ll be brave enough to actually hit the slopes. Wish me luck!”

– Makayla Hendricks, National Vice-President of Public Relations

“Every year, my family marks the holidays as a time to come together. It’s always nice to come together as a family and see all of my siblings. It’s always bittersweet when we have to say goodbye, but at least we know we will see each other in the coming year.”

– Nathon Taylor, National Vice-President of Membership

“Every Christmas Eve, my family and I make homemade pizzas together – fresh dough and everything! We also watch my all-time favorite Christmas movie: Christmas with the Kranks.”

– Josh Sorbe, National President

“My family carries out many traditions during the holiday season, some of which consist of putting up the Christmas tree on Thanksgiving Day. We also watch The Polar Express and drink homemade hot chocolate at least once as a family movie night. On Christmas Eve, night we open the gifts we gave each other and wear Santa hats to bed.”

– Monica Jones, National Vice-President of Development
