Join the Membership Challenge!
By Nathon Taylor, National Vice-President of Membership
I believe I speak for any current or past FCCLA member when I say that I wouldn’t be the person I am today without this great organization. We meet amazing people, hear inspiring stories, explore career pathways, develop life skills, and learn more about ourselves than we could have ever imagined.
We have a challenge. Since 1945, FCCLA has impacted millions of youth leaders. While the reach of FCCLA is significant, our membership continues to decrease. The 2014-2015 Membership Report put our membership at approximately 154,000, a more than 70% decrease from our organization’s peak in 1966, when we had more than 600,000 members. Believe it or not, this isn’t the only alarming factor that is related to our membership:
- 2015 Membership Report Regional Breakdown:
- Southern Region: Texas was the only state to increase membership.
- Central Region: No state increased membership.
- North Atlantic Region: Connecticut was the only state to increase membership.
- Pacific Region: 5 of 13 associations increased membership.
- More than 5,000,000 students are enrolled in FACS courses, but only 154,000 are members of FCCLA.
- Many advisers do not affiliate all of their students. (Students are not “members” if they do not affiliate.)
- There is a shortage of FACS educators (you can view read more in Monica Jones’ February blog here).
We need your help! With that said, what will you do to share the opportunities offered through FCCLA? What can you do to recruit, retain, and recognize members? As National Vice-President of Membership, I challenge you to share your passion for FCCLA with everyone around you. Show others the benefits that FCCLA offers. Increasing membership has to start with each and every one of YOU. When we come together with this common goal, we can accomplish anything and reach new students with the empowerment of FCCLA.
Go For The Red and team up with us for Membership Madness this March! In an effort to continue to bring awareness to our great organization, the National Executive Council created “Membership Madness” – a campaign in March seeking to assist affiliated chapters in recruiting new members. During March, your chapter could be eligible to win a $50 voucher to host a party to assist in your recruitment efforts. At least one random drawing will take place each week during the month. Complete this form to apply for the grant and recruit new members during “March Membership Madness.” Every applicant will also receive an electronic recruitment toolkit – created by members for members! Membership recruitment is vital to a chapter’s success, and it should always be a top priority. There is no better time than now to recruit members.
With this initiative, we can take FCCLA to new membership heights and empower our peers to get involved in what we believe is one of the best organizations open to youth. With strong membership, we are empowered to be leaders in our families, careers, and communities. Let’s set a new trend and grow membership like mad in March!
To 70 More Years of Strong Membership!
