INSIDE: Ringing in the New Year

10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1…Happy FCCLA Year!

2016 is almost here! How will you be ringing it in? I’ll be watching the big ball drop in Times Square with some friends as well as recovering from holiday swim training. Whether you’re welcoming 2016 with friends, family, or solo, a new year means an opportunity to improve. I have 3 challenges for you.

First, I challenge you to reflect upon the past 365 days. What qualities of yours did you strengthen? What areas could be improved? In the past year, FCCLA has celebrated many successes. We had 8,000 attendees at our 70th Anniversary celebration at National Leadership Conference, our national program Student Body was updated and is now stronger than ever, and the NEC initiated a new grant program (the IMPACT Fund). 2015 was great, but 2016 gives us the opportunity to be better.

Second, I challenge you to set goals for 2016. Remember to make them SMART goals: specific, measureable, attainable, realistic, and timely. FCCLA has set a goal to introduce two updated, strengthened national programs – Financial Fitness and Families Acting for Community Traffic Safety (FACTS) – at the National Leadership Conference in San Diego. I’ve set a goal to be the best FCCLA National President that I can be by interacting with members, keeping the NEC organized and efficient, and being an active member of the FCCLA Board of Directors. Set a resolution to become a more involved member of YOUR family, career, and community!

Finally, stick with your goals. Goals are great to have, but following through is just as important. Write them down on a sticky note and post them in places you’ll keep seeing them. Find a buddy that wants to accomplish the same thing you do. Set a reward system for yourself as you pass certain milestones on the way to your goal. I have a big whiteboard in my bedroom where I write down all of my goals. Sticking with your goals shows determination and passion.

The opportunities are endless, so use this time to begin your journey. With your help, FCCLA will have a great 2016!
