Intelligent Speed Assistance
Drive Smart. Drive Safe. Win Big.
Every second on the road is a chance to make a difference — not just for yourself, but for everyone who shares it with you. Speeding remains one of the leading factors in teen driver crashes, and even a few extra miles per hour can turn a simple drive into something catastrophic. But what if you could help change that story?
This year, FCCLA, in partnership with the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), the National Road Safety Foundation (NRSF), and SCRAM Systems, invites you to be part of something extraordinary — the FCCLA Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) Contest.
Through this groundbreaking initiative, students have the unique opportunity to test cutting-edge LifeSafer Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology — a real-world tool designed to prevent speeding, promote smarter driving, and save lives. Participants will share their journey, inspire others, and compete for an unforgettable experience that celebrates leadership, innovation, and responsibility behind the wheel.
This is more than a contest. It is your chance to make roads safer, your voice heard, and your driving choices matter.

What Is Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA)?
Imagine having a safety co-pilot that helps you stay focused, confident, and in control — that is exactly what Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) does.
Developed by LifeSafer, ISA is a breakthrough vehicle technology that helps drivers stay within posted speed limits by providing real-time feedback and active speed management. Installed in just minutes and compatible with nearly any vehicle, ISA acts as a speed safety net for new drivers, encouraging smart choices every time they get behind the wheel.
How It Works:
- Real-Time Speed Limit Awareness: ISA automatically detects the current speed limit and provides visual and audible alerts when drivers exceed it.
- Active Speed Prevention: Using GPS data and onboard mapping, the system prevents the vehicle from accelerating beyond the legal limit.
- Parent Feedback: After each trip, parents can receive easy-to-understand reports that track driving performance and progress.
- Accountability Features: With tamper detection and temporary override settings, ISA keeps new drivers responsible while allowing flexibility for safe learning.
By helping teens develop safe driving habits early, ISA is not just changing the way we drive — it is transforming the way we think about responsibility, confidence, and safety on the road.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
WHAT IS INTELLIGENT SPEED ASSISTANCE (ISA)?
Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) is an advanced vehicle safety system designed to help drivers stay within posted speed limits. Using GPS and speed map data, ISA provides real-time feedback and prevents vehicles from exceeding legal speed limits. The LifeSafer ISA device promotes smarter, safer driving — especially for new drivers developing lifelong habits.
-
HOW DOES THE LIFESAFER ISA DEVICE WORK?
The LifeSafer Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) device combines GPS technology, onboard sensors, and an electronic control module to monitor your vehicle’s speed in real time.
Here is how it works step by step:
-
GPS Tracking and Speed Recognition: The ISA system constantly references a nationwide speed-limit database, detecting the posted speed limit for the road you are driving on.
-
Instant Feedback: When your speed approaches or exceeds the limit, the device provides both visual alerts (on a small dashboard display) and audible warnings to remind you to slow down.
-
Active Speed Limiting: If the driver continues to accelerate, the system gently limits the vehicle’s ability to go faster by reducing throttle response — without braking or cutting power.
-
Learning and Accountability Tools: Each trip is recorded to generate summary reports that show how often speed limits were followed, giving parents and guardians valuable insight into safe driving habits.
-
Tamper Detection & Temporary Override: The device detects any attempt to disconnect or bypass it, but it also includes a short-term override feature that allows a driver to momentarily bypass the limiter when needed (for example, to merge safely).
The LifeSafer ISA is designed to teach awareness, responsibility, and smooth control — supporting new drivers while keeping everyone on the road safer.
-
-
HOW IS THE LIFESAFER ISA DEVICE INSTALLED?
Installation is quick, professional, and completely free for selected participants.
- Certified Technicians: The LifeSafer ISA device must be installed by a certified technician from SCRAM Systems, the trusted partner behind the technology.
- Connection to the Vehicle: The technician connects the small ISA control unit to the vehicle’s onboard diagnostics port (commonly known as the OBD-II port), typically located beneath the dashboard. This port allows the device to safely communicate with the car’s systems to monitor speed and performance.
- Mounting the Display: A compact display screen is placed on or near the dashboard, giving the driver real-time information on their current speed and the posted limit.
- System Check and Setup: After installation, the technician verifies that the device is fully functional, synced to GPS, and ready to record accurate trip data.
- Removal: When the program concludes, the same certified professionals will remove the device quickly and restore the vehicle to its original condition.
The entire process takes approximately 30–45 minutes, and no permanent modifications are made to the vehicle.
-
WHO CAN APPLY TO PARTICIPATE?
Applicants must be FCCLA Members ages 16–18 who hold a valid learner’s permit, intermediate license, or full driver’s license (under 18). Applicants must also have parent or guardian consent to participate and commit to using the ISA device for six months.
-
IS THERE A COST TO PARTICIPATE?
No. Thanks to FCCLA’s partnership with the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), the National Road Safety Foundation (NRSF), and SCRAM Systems, participation in the ISA Contest is completely free. Installation, maintenance, and removal of the LifeSafer ISA device are fully covered.
-
WILL THE ISA DEVICE AFFECT MY INSURANCE OR VEHICLE PERFORMANCE?
No. The LifeSafer ISA device does not impact insurance rates, engine performance, or vehicle functionality. It only limits accelerator response once the speed limit is reached. Participation in this project is not reported to law enforcement, insurance companies, or other agencies.
-
CAN I TURN THE DEVICE OFF OR OVERRIDE IT?
The ISA device does not have an “off” switch, but it includes a temporary override feature that allows a short, controlled bypass when needed — a tool designed to help new drivers build judgment and awareness under real-world conditions.
-
WHAT HAPPENS TO MY DRIVING DATA?
All data collected through the ISA program is used solely for educational and research purposes. Data is anonymized, meaning individual participants will never be identified by name in reports or public materials.
-
HOW LONG DOES THE PROGRAM LAST?
The ISA Contest runs for six months, giving teens the time and experience needed to develop strong, lasting driving habits. Selected participants will receive detailed instructions and ongoing support throughout the project.
-
WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO IF SELECTED?
Participants will:
- Have a LifeSafer ISA device installed in their vehicle.
- Participate in two virtual check-in meetings.
- Post monthly updates about their ISA experience on social media.
- Complete a short interview or questionnaire at the end of the program.
-
